Cures for Homesickness

I reckoned that toughness, fortitude and independence would come naturally to people if needed. However I change my mind now. There are moments when we just want to hang out in the familiar streets after dinner, being held in parents' arms; when we just desire to satisfy our tongues with a simple hometown dish which contains our favourite seasoning; when we are hunger for the remote control to move rapidly between TV channels and when we are awfully tired of the other seven eyes in the dorm. At last, there is always an ultimate moment when we realise helplessly that we are too incapable to do just one of the above.

What makes homesickness sicker is that, firstly, science cannot provide a cure for all world's problems and I suppose homesickness can and only be treated by ourselves; secondly, there is no instant cure for the condition so that we may feel worse if we force ourselves to pretend to be OK; thirdly, prevention is always better than cure.

Fortunately, things can be done to stop homesickness from updating to the sickest.
To begin with, trivial things matter a lot to our emotional fluctuation. Remember to refuel and refill ourselves with new goals and hobbies so that we can be on the go and will not have time to "feel sick". Take note when choosing books and movies for entertainment, since some of them may be too sad and romantic and contain all the fine sentiment to evoke nostalgia. Comedies are secure enough to put us in a happy mood. Additionally, making regular contact with our families and friends in China can help us form a habit of missing them regularly, instead of now and then.

Moreover, optimistic is believed to be a cure-all for various psychological dissatisfaction. We can encourage ourselves to look forward and pay attention to new things. We can compare our conditions with most of the students who study in another province in China and may probably come to the conclusion that there are not many differences after all. What's more, nothing can be more factual than that time really flies, so persuading ourselves into believing that we will be at the airport next moment can effectively refresh and relax our overloaded minds. Sometimes, I feel free to imagine how my papa and mama are enjoying themselves as I am not there to criticize the food, complain about the homework and ask for more pocket money. Last but not least, keep in touch with friends here who are from the same place in China, because an atmosphere of home is sure to be created and we may feel that we are not fighting against homesickness alone, anyway.

All roads lead to Rome and this time Rome is, as a matter of a fact, right in my hands, as long as I remain the confidence to live a happy and fruitful life.
