Recently, the most popular topic of SM3 students is the selection of our majors. We have to decide which major we would like to chose in April. When someone comes across me, the first thing he or she asks me must about the major which I would like to select.
Actually, we should take our selection seriously, because which major we chose will influence our future. We must consider that which area we are interested in such as math, chemistry or physics. You will focus on the subjects when you have interest on them. The more interest you have, the better you can learn. So, my suggestion is that do not just follow what others chose or so called the popular major. Just select whatever you are really interested in or you want to make an achievement on. Interest can be the best promotion in your study.
Normally, we can only choose science or engineering. However, we can choose other subjects as minors or make a double degree. For instance, if you are fond of finance, you can minor in finance at the same time of your major. So I think we still have a wide range of selection. We could improve ourselves in different areas. The more ability you have, the more opportunities you can get.
What I have heard is that some people also want to select common engineering. May be it is a good selection when you are confused that which major you are interested in. You can make use of the first year of study to make sure what you like, and then go into your favorite faculty. Someone thinks that we may waste a year in the common engineering, but comparing your future this year is not wasted, for you choose a right area of your development. Generally, you may just learn one or two more subjects when you are in common engineering. So, if you are really not sure what you like, just choose common engineering.
In conclusion, we should listen to others’ opinions, but the final decision is made by ourselves.
