Seize the day--------Dead Poets Society

“Captain!!! My captain!!! ” He is the captain of the students. He is the man who gives students courage to obey their own souls.

It is rally lucky to have a teacher like Mr. Keating, who could say no to the traditional education system and try his best to lead the students to be themselves. He encouraged the students to stand on the table to get a different view of the world. He let them wrap the first pages of their text books which wrote guidelines on reading, to allow them to enjoy poems. He inspired them to think freely and write their own poems. At first, people regarded him as a clown. However, as the time went by, more and more people accepted him and his idea. It was under his influence that Neil demonstrated his talent in acting. It was under his influence that Knox told his feeling to his favorite girl. It was under his influence that Charlie dropt his shyness and overcame the external restrains. Though Neil didn’t fulfill his ambition and committed suicide, though Knox’s love was refused, they were acting themselves. And the influence would be more obvious in the other guys in the future, I think.

As what I just mentioned, Neil killed himself with his father’s pistol, which was really tragic. Revolution is combined with blood. His death was a silent protest, not only to his parents, but also to the reality. He couldn’t give up his beloved acting. He wasn’t willing to give way to reality, either. So death could be something relaxed. That was the only thing he could act as a controller of his fate. To him, that was how his existed.

At the end of the film, Mr. Keating was forced to leave. Most of the students in the class stood on their desks to show their support for him, ignoring the headmaster’s forbidding. Those who dare to stand up, I think, had inherited the values of life from Mr. Keating--------seize the day. And I think this is the most exciting part of the film.

  2. Boys and girls like us always want to lead a more free life. But the fact is that we have to take many things into account, which makes us cowhearted. In a certain extant, it is a pity that we can not even control our own life. Someone like Neil chooses to kill himself. However, most of us learn to get accustomed with that. The movie Dead Poets Society tells us that we can live in another way, more bravely and proudly. Thank you for introducing such a movie to us.

  4. It's impossible to please everyone. I think the boy shouldn't kill himself. It is such a tragedy. We should seize the day as you said, life can be colorful. However, life is so limited.
As a Chinese ancient poet Sushi described the nature, it's unlimited to get and it won't be used up, so it's the god's gift to us! I think it's also true when it comes to life.

  6. It was a great honour for me to choose the same topic in the blog with you. This is an interesting cooperation. The movie is a convulsion to my soul. The first time I watched it I was just totally devoting myself to the preparations for the final National College Entrance Exam. At that time I was extremely tired of the monotony of the repeated study. But this movie became an outlet of my anguish. The movie taught us how to be ourselves and how to challenge the status-quo. We always pay too much attention on others’ comments but concern less about our own thoughts. The movie is a motivation. If you have something of the same value and interest as this one, I hope that we can share together and cooperate once again! I anticipate your comments on my blog!

  7. Thanks very much for your comment. But there is one issue I want to clarify. You said that my blog contained a lot of details which you thought indicated that I understood the film completely and deeply. But I had the same feeling when reading your blog. It is very strange, isn’t it? I think one reason may be that we expressed respective views and feelings in the blog. We watched the same movie, but what we grasped from it are different. You got some details and I got some other. So it is much required that we discuss together and frequently exchange ideas each other without any hesitation. COOPERATION can really help us a lot, which I have mentioned in the comment on your blog. I feel compelled to be your friend because your frankness and conscientiousness made a deep impression on me. You are always dynamic and direct but I am shy and silent. I can learn from you a lot.
Another reason is that I have watched the movie in China. Of course the dialogue was translated into Chinese. Although most of the time I couldn’t hear clearly every word of the lines when I watched it last Sunday, I could guess the meaning. I also searched for some related information on line so that I got more details. Actually my English is quite poor. You know I come from Gansu and in my province the English level we should reach is far lower than yours. In the beginning of the preparatory course I felt really frustrated because all of you are so excellent in English, especially oral English. I always felt afraid to be left behind. I really need your help. I wrote this reply with open-minded sincerity. May a spectacular progress emerge in our arduous study!
