Choosing a Major, Any Suggestions?

As is known to all, we will have to choose a major we’d like to study in April. This must be a huge event of this year, and even, our life. I am struggling on this decision all the time recently.
In fact, we have already chosen our major once back in China for our last university. I think many of us would have chosen the most popular one of that university even if we didn’t like it. All right, another question has been raise, what major do we exactly like? To me, it is a tough question, how can I know whether I like it or not without having a single class of it? I thought I would like applied math which I chose to study in Xi’an Jiaotong University, but it turned out to be that math in university was not as interesting as in high school. As a matter of fact, I prefer to choose engineering in NUS.
So far, Civil Engineering (CE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) have been taken into consideration. If I were not bad at Chemistry, I would choose CE without hesitating because my dad works in this field which may benefit me a lot, and most important, I like buildings. EE has an obvious advantage over others. You can get your NUS bachelor degree as well as a master degree of a Britain school when you graduate. However, I don’t know whether I can do well in it because I am not sure what exactly will be learnt. ME is also a major I am interested in, but I don’t know whether I can draw the 3D pictures well. ISE sounds perfect, but according to my performance in college entrance exam back in China, I may not be chosen.
What’s more, I haven’t yet closed the door for science and computing. Such majors like Statistics and E-Commerce also sound interesting to me.
You may think I can get some advice from my parents, but apparently neither of them wants to take the risk of being the “sinner” who leads the son to a wrong field. They want me to choose by my own.
This whole thing about choosing a major is really annoying me a lot. Can you guys give me some suggestions?

  1. I am very confused, too. I want to study engineering but I think that the majors in SOC is not bad, either. All right, suppose i only made my choise in the faculty of engineering, it's still very hard, too. i think i am more interested in ME, but EE is more suitable for me. what's more, it is said chemical engineering is better in NUS, and the graduates are more popular in Singapore and they will got a higher salary in everage. Now you mentioned ISE, which reminds me that ISE is a good choise, too.
Now, you want me to give you a suggestion. i also give myself a suggestion meanwhile. let's think it over what we really want, what we really interested in and what is our purpose to study here. whatever you choose finally, believe that it is a best choice to you and it will benifit you in your life.

  2. My suggestion is that you should make a list of what matters most to you. For instance, if it is making 1 million dollars before you reach 30, write it down. You may want to add what many people regard as important - employment, promotion, PhD scholarships, appeal to girls, status etc. Once you have a list of what is important to you, ask if the choice you have in mind will help you achieve what you want. Consult your parents or friends who know you well if you need help with this. About your comment that neither your father or mother wanted to be blamed for recommending a course of study, has it got to do with your blaming them in the past for something similar to this?

  3. My suggestion is that you should analyze your strengths and interests. If you have strong interest in some subject, you can consider choosing the major mainly related to that subject. Your interest will motivate you to work hard on it. You will enjoy your study at the same time. Of course, your strength should also be thought about. If you do well in some subject, you will be very competitive in your major, which helps you become outstanding. Every coin has two sides. Once you decide to do something after thinking it over, just do it. Or you will spend too much energy on making decisions, which is a waste of time.
