Dilemma in Major Choice

Recently, how to choose major has become a popular topic in Eton Hall. Many lecture of major choice were held in NUS and we all participate in these kinds of activities. But I wonder whether it worked or helped us in our choice of major. I suppose most of us will suffer when we make decisions. After all, it will decide our future to a large degree. What aspects should we consider when we make choices? According to interests or just make full use of our marks in National Entrance Examination? They were all problems puzzling us.
Someone would like to choose a major though which they will be well-paid after their graduation, others would like to follow the trend last year to choose majors such as EE and Chemical Engineering and there are some students who only make their choices according to their interest without thinking the situation of job market. So which is the right way, I am also puzzled. Making decisions is always a difficult experience for human beings. Nevertheless, in my opinion, interest comes first together with thinking the situation of job market. It was because that people will enjoy when we have interest in our major. In opposite they will suffer when they have no interest at all. We can study more efficiently with interest and like to explore deeper in this major and it will also be easier to achieve success in your favorite subjects. But we must take situation of job into consideration. Our society is changing at every moment and we must keep track of it. There must be some majors eliminated by our society. If you are interested in very kind of major, you’d better change your idea. We are changing the world just as we adapt to this changeable society. So it will be a wise choice to blend your interest with considering the current situation of our society.
It was not long before we make our final decisions. The third week in April will be our deadline. And I wish we could all make appropriate decisions for ourselves.

  1. I did meet the same dilemma situation now. I think I’m kind of struggle my major choice. Actually, I don’t think I am interested in any major currently. Then it seems that either major is ok for me and many people think science is a good choice for girls. But I don’t like mathematic at all and QF becomes a rather tough school to get in. As for SOC, I never think about it! It’s not suitable for human beings, I think. Then, it seems quite simple: Faculty of Engineering. However, with so many schools in it, I feel confused again. Maybe you are right, interest and job are hard to balance. Hope you and me can both choose what we like and can earn a lot of money from what we learn. Maybe it’s a dream, will come true in the future. :)

  2. Yes, what you said is common among us. But it seems that it is a little easier for me to choose. I will never choose computer faculty because computer radialization is very harmful to our body. So the options are less. But I am still thinking. Actually, I think QF is a good choice, but it seems that everybody thinks so! It must be very competitive. Thus, apart from interest and pay as you mentioned, I think capability is another significant aspect. It is a tough thing to decide. Anyway, wish all of us a well-content major. (*^__^*)

  3. To be honest, perhaps I am the kind of person that you mentioned as driven by the lure of the salary after graduation. The society has conditioned the youth to pursue a good mark in their school and also a good pay in their job. I gusess it depends on every individual. Some people have enough courage to turn their personal interest into a real career. Nevertheless, others may seperate their interest with their work. Their opinion is like this: With a higher pay, I can do whatever I like. I can buy the best golf equippment and even by a private helicopter to explore the sky. So they are willing to bear the tudious job.Meanwhile, the first group of people can't stand the idea to do things they don't like for 40 hours a week! This is a matter of personality.
