Plot Summary
This story tells about a murder and focuses on how the murderer thought and felt when he was trying to kill his neighbor, an old man who never did anything wrong to him, as well as after he killed his neighbor. “I” eagerly wanted to kill the neighbor simply because “I” abhorred the old man’s terrible eye. So “I” took action and killed the old man in a very cunning way that did not leave a single clue to any other people. It was almost impossible to find out what “I” had done to the old man, but at last the sound of the pulsation of the late neighbor’s heart revealed “my” sin, and forced “me” to admit the deed that I had done to murder the old, evil-eyed man.

This is a story about how a man committed a crime and what he thought when he was trying to commit the crime, that is, to murder an innocent neighbor. It creates a very vivid scene of what “I” wanted to do to murder the neighbor and what was going on in “my” mind. It produces such a strong deadly atmosphere that readers could feel guilty inside their hearts for the murderer as long as they read the story.By reading this story, a kind of fear in my heart grows. Though the story is a little bit ridiculous, I feel that it is based on something real, and I seriously believe that the author was trying to arouse our attention to focus on certain kind of feeling that we share in everyday life. Everyone develops a certain kind of desire in life, and sometimes we have sinful desires, but what is shocking is that for most of the time our desires grow so strong and so intensive that we do not even feel guilty
